Women are the minority at all major tech companies, most notably at Amazon (45%), Meta (37%), Apple (35%), Google (34%), and Microsoft (32%), and those numbers drop even more when narrowed down for leadership roles, according to data from the Women in Tech network. At Google, women only comprise 29% of leadership positions, and nearly 37% at Meta. Apple, Google, and Microsoft report similar numbers at 31%, 33%, and 32%, respectively. In the industry overall, women only represent 25% of C-level leadership roles, and only 5% of those are BIPOC women.
Women also continue to report workplace culture issues, with many reporting they continue to experience microaggressions such as being spoken over in meetings, feeling pigeonholed by stereotypes, and being asked to do menial tasks such as bring food for meetings or other things unrelated to their roles.
As representation of women in tech continues to struggle, it’s critical to have avenues where women can build and foster community with others who understand what it’s like to make a career in tech.
Whether you already have a strong network of women colleagues in your industry or if you’re looking to expand your community, there are several conferences designed for women in IT, but most aren’t just for women — they’re open to allies and anyone who supports diversity in the workplace. So here are six that aim to connect women and other underrepresented groups in technology to build better communities in the tech industry.
